Keyword Difficulty: When to Target Competitive Keywords vs. Easy Wins

Muginai Team · · 3 min read · 733 words

Keyword difficulty scores are estimates, not verdicts. A KD of 70 means current top-ranking pages have strong backlink profiles — it doesn’t mean you can’t rank. What it means is that ranking requires either strong domain authority, superior content, or both, and will likely take longer than a KD 30 query. The decision framework isn’t “should I target this keyword” but “what do I need to rank for this keyword and does that investment make sense?”

How KD Scores Are Calculated

Different tools calculate KD differently:

Ahrefs KD: Based primarily on the number of referring domains linking to pages currently ranking in the top 10. Scale: 0-100. Above 70 is considered difficult; above 80 requires significant domain authority.

Semrush KD%: Combines backlink data, page authority estimates, and search features (featured snippets, Knowledge Panels). More composite than Ahrefs’s backlink-primary model.

Moz KD: Based on Page Authority of pages in the top 10, which itself incorporates backlink metrics. Scale: 0-100.

Key limitation: All KD scores measure the current competition, not future competition. A keyword with current KD 40 that’s growing in search volume will attract more competition over time, raising difficulty.

Domain Authority as a KD Filter

Your domain authority determines which KD range is realistically targetable:

Domain Authority (DR/DA)Realistically targetable KD
0-20KD 0-25
20-40KD 0-40
40-60KD 20-60
60-80KD 40-80
80+KD 60+

These are rough guidelines, not rules. Content quality, topical authority, and search intent alignment can allow lower-DR sites to rank for higher-KD queries when competition is primarily broad-authority sites lacking specific expertise.

Topical authority exception: A new site with DR 20 can rank for KD 60 queries in its specific topic area if it has genuine depth in that topic that the ranking pages lack. Keyword difficulty measures domain-level competition, not topical expertise.

The Business Value Filter

KD should be evaluated against search volume and commercial value together:

KD 80, volume 50,000/month, high commercial value: Worth major investment — this is a category-defining keyword. A DR 50+ site should invest in a comprehensive, link-worthy page targeting this.

KD 80, volume 200/month, low commercial value: Not worth the investment. Ranking would require significant effort for minimal return.

KD 20, volume 5,000/month, high commercial value: High-priority quick win. Create a quality page, rank within weeks, generate immediate business value.

KD 20, volume 200/month, low commercial value: Low priority. Easy to rank but not worth prioritizing over higher-value targets.

When to Target High-KD Keywords

Situations where high-KD keyword investment is justified:

Category-defining queries: “Project management software,” “best CRM” — these queries define your category. Ranking requires years of investment but creates compound returns. Start with supporting long-tail content to build topical authority, then work toward the head term.

Brand-adjacent competitive terms: If a competitor ranks position 1 for a high-value, high-KD query and you’re position 5-8, incremental position improvement from 5 to 3 can double CTR. The competitive gap is smaller than it appears.

Supportable by existing authority: If your site has DR 75 and genuinely covers the topic comprehensively, a KD 75 query is a reasonable target. The KD estimate should match your domain range.

When to Target Low-KD Keywords First

New or low-DR sites: Low KD is the only realistic path to early organic traffic. Build domain authority through ranking for lower-difficulty queries before attempting higher competition.

Content calendar prioritization: When bandwidth is limited, low-KD/high-value queries deliver faster ROI. Every team should have a pipeline of KD < 30 targets for efficient content production.

Long-tail before short-tail: “Best CRM for freelance consultants” (KD 25) before “best CRM” (KD 85). Rank for the specific query first, build topical authority, then compete for the broader term.

Reading SERP Evidence Beyond KD Scores

KD scores don’t capture everything. SERP analysis reveals:

  • User-generated content in top 10: Reddit or Quora pages ranking for a query signal Google finds UGC sufficient — harder for professional pages to displace
  • Domain diversity: 5 different domains in top 10 → more competitive than 3 results from one dominant domain
  • Content age: If top results are all 5+ years old and haven’t been updated, fresh, comprehensive content has a better chance
  • Featured snippet presence: Queries with featured snippets have a takeable position independent of the overall ranking competition
