SEO Audit: Systematic Diagnosis of Organic Performance Issues

Muginai Team · · 4 min read · 884 words

An SEO audit is only useful if it leads to prioritized action. Sites with 1,000 issues often have 5 issues that account for 80% of the performance gap — identifying those 5 is the audit’s job. Everything else is background noise that gets fixed in maintenance cycles, not prioritized sprints.

Crawlability and Indexation Audit

Crawlability issues prevent Google from seeing content; indexation issues prevent Google from including crawled content in search results.

Crawl health checks:

  • robots.txt review: ensure no critical directories or page types are disallowed. User-agent: * Disallow: / is a catastrophic misconfiguration that has been accidentally deployed on major sites.
  • Crawl errors in Google Search Console: 404 errors on pages that should exist, 5xx server errors, redirect chains
  • Crawl depth: important pages should be reachable within 3 clicks from the homepage. Pages buried 8 clicks deep get crawled infrequently.
  • Orphan pages: use Screaming Frog or similar to identify pages with no internal links pointing to them — these are effectively invisible to Google

Indexation health checks:

  • site:yourdomain.com query: estimated index count (rough, but flag dramatic over- or under-indexation)
  • Search Console “Pages” report: Crawled but not indexed (Google found the page but decided not to include it), Discovered but not crawled (Google knows about the page but hasn’t fetched it yet)
  • Duplicate content: canonical tag review, www vs. non-www consolidation, HTTP vs HTTPS consolidation, trailing slash consistency
  • Noindex audit: ensure no important pages are inadvertently noindexed

On-Page Optimization Audit

Title tag review:

  • Missing title tags
  • Duplicate title tags (two different pages with identical titles)
  • Truncated titles (over 60 characters)
  • Title tags that don’t contain the target keyword
  • Over-optimized titles (keyword stuffed)

Meta description review:

  • Missing meta descriptions on important pages
  • Duplicate meta descriptions
  • Meta descriptions over 160 characters

Header structure:

  • H1 presence and uniqueness (one H1 per page, contains primary keyword)
  • Header hierarchy (H2s under H1, H3s under H2s — don’t skip levels)
  • Missing H1s or multiple H1s on the same page

URL structure:

  • URLs containing query parameters that create duplicate content
  • Dynamic URLs that should be made static
  • Keyword-less URLs (IDs or random strings instead of descriptive slugs)

Content Quality Audit

Thin content identification: Pages with fewer than 300 words that exist primarily for navigation or conversion — audit whether these are creating quality dilution signals. Thin category pages, empty state pages, and stub pages can all reduce overall site quality signals.

Keyword cannibalization: Multiple pages targeting the same keyword dilute ranking signals. Use Search Console to identify queries where multiple pages receive similar (low) impressions — these may be cannibalizing each other.

Content freshness: Identify pages with outdated content (year-based references, discontinued products, outdated statistics). Pages where freshness matters (news, tutorials for software that updates, pricing pages) require systematic refresh schedules.

Content gap analysis: What topics are your ranking competitors covering that you’re not? Map competitor content clusters against your own to identify topic gaps that represent ranking opportunities.

Technical SEO Audit

Core Web Vitals: Pull CWV data from Search Console for all page groups. Identify templates with “Poor” CWV status — these are performance-affecting issues, not just user experience.

Mobile usability: Search Console’s Mobile Usability report identifies pages failing mobile requirements: clickable elements too close together, content wider than screen, text too small.

Page speed: PageSpeed Insights audit for key templates (homepage, category page, product page, blog post). Performance varies significantly across templates — audit each type, not just the homepage.

Structured data validation: Test key structured data implementations with Google’s Rich Results Test. Schema errors prevent rich result eligibility.

Security: HTTPS implementation, mixed content warnings, valid SSL certificate.

Link profile overview:

  • Total linking domains (not links — one domain can have 10,000 links)
  • Domain authority distribution of linking domains
  • Link growth over time (sudden drops can indicate link loss or penalties)

Toxic link identification: Links from irrelevant, low-quality, or spam domains can contribute to algorithmic or manual penalties. Use Ahrefs, SEMrush, or Majestic’s spam scoring to identify potentially harmful links.

Anchor text distribution: Over-optimized anchor text (predominantly exact-match commercial anchors) is a manipulation signal. Healthy profiles have a mix of branded, naked URL, partial-match, and long-tail anchors.

Link loss audit: Identify high-value links that have been lost (page deleted on linking site, redirect removed). Lost links are worth attempting to reclaim.

Prioritization Framework

Not all audit findings are equal. Prioritize by:

  1. Impact on crawling/indexing: Nothing ranks if Google can’t crawl and index it. Crawl blocks, mass noindex errors, and canonicalization issues are always priority 1.
  2. Impact on high-value pages: Issues affecting your highest-traffic or highest-converting pages take precedence over issues on low-value pages.
  3. Quick wins: Issues that are simple to fix with significant impact. A missing H1 on 50 important pages is a 30-minute fix that can have measurable ranking impact.
  4. Technical debt: Systematic issues (inconsistent canonical implementation, broken internal linking patterns) that require structural fixes are important but typically scheduled for development sprints, not emergency remediation.

The output of an SEO audit should be a prioritized action list with estimated impact, not a PDF of findings that gets filed away. Connect each finding to a specific fix, owner, and timeline.
